Deepavali (or may known as Diwali in other parts of the world), is an important festival of lights celebrated by Hindus. As one of the major festivals of the year in Malaysia, it is also an official holiday. It is a time for the Hindus to celebrate via their traditional customs at their homes as well as having a family reunion. This year, Deepavali falls on October 24th.

Penang Street Art (Various Murals in Farlim)
Various art murals found in Farlim, a town in Ayer Itam area which is officially called Bandar Baru Air Itam.
Farlim (as mostly known locally here) is a town consists mainly of residential neighbourhood and was established in the 1980s by the Farlim Group on a land belonging to the Khoo Kongsi. It was said that the name Farlim meant “beautiful forest”.
These murals are located mainly within the Medan Angsana neighbourhood in Farlim.
A View of Toh Aka Lane
Lorong Toh Aka (Toh Aka Lane) is located at the heart of the heritage zone in George Town and is an old and rather narrow street. The street was said to be the home of iron smiths back in the old days. Rows of pre-war heritage style townhouses line up the street and majority of these houses belong to the Cheah clan community.

A number of old back alleys in George Town recently went through a ‘beautification process’ as new colorful tiled walkways are being built for people to take a stroll along these rustic but often forgotten alleys.

A view of Penang’s very own Downing Street in George Town. Named after the famous Downing Street in London, the British built their government offices on this street during the colonial era.

Art murals depicting the history of New World Park in George Town. Established in 1939, it was once a venue of entertainment and amusement park popular during the 1950s. Now it is mainly consists of a large open-air food court with hawker stalls which are popular with both tourists and locals, along with a few other restaurants.

Penang Perspective: Books Booth in George Town
Old phone booths being converted to “mini library” as part of the George Town’s effort to promote reading culture. These mini libraries are located along Beach Street, near the north end side.
