The Bukit Mertajam town (normally called BM) is a small old town located near the foot of the very hill which it derived its name from. The town is located in Seberang Perai, the mainland side of Penang. Formerly known as Bridge Street, this road was renamed as C.Y. Choy Road (or Jalan C.Y. Choy) in the 1980s in honor of the third and last mayor of George Town. During his tenure as a mayor in the 1960s, Choy was reportedly also known as the “Quiet Mayor of George Town” due to his low profile, until the Federal Government discontinued the local elections for cities.
