George Town Street View: Jalan Masjid (Masjid Road)

Jalan Masjid

Jalan Masjid (or Jalan Mesjid, Masjid Road) is a small road off Chulia Street which can be found just right beside the Sky Hotel building in George Town. The word ‘masjid’ refers to a mosque, and the road was named after one of the small and old Indian Muslim mosques in the Chulia Street area. There is also a small Indian-Muslim tomb called Makam Maulana Miskin Waliallah located along this road (as pictured below).

The Bukit Mertajam town (normally called BM) is a small old town located near the foot of the very hill which it derived its name from. The town is located in Seberang Perai, the mainland side of Penang. The streetscape of the Bukit Mertajam town is similar with George Town’s heritage area, with pre-war style shophouses lining up along its streets.

Nearby attractions in Bukit Mertajam area include the St Anne Cathedral and the Berapit Siamese Hill Temple.

Formerly known as Bridge Street, this road was renamed as C.Y. Choy Road (or Jalan C.Y. Choy) in the 1980s in honor of the third and last mayor of George Town. During his tenure as a mayor in the 1960s, Choy was reportedly also known as the “Quiet Mayor of George Town” due to his low profile, until the Federal Government discontinued the local elections for cities.
