Penang Isle: The Snake Temple

The Snake Temple (also known as Temple of the Azure Clouds) is located at the sourthern end of Penang, not far from the Penang International Airport. The small temple is home to a few varieties of snake species, mostly pit vipers (although the number of snakes there are getting fewer now due to nearby industrial development).

According to legend, the temple was built in to worship a deified monk who was also a great healer. Before the building of the temple, the monk had given shelter to the snakes of the nearby jungle and when the temple was completed, the snakes moved in.

Penang Isle: Yap Temple & Kongsi

The Yap Temple and the Yap Kongsi complex is located right beside the Choo Chay Keong Temple. The temple section houses the ancestral tablets of the Yap families. This Yap clanhouse complex in Armenian Street was built in 1924 with the incorporation of Straits Eclectic architectural design style.

Originally, it was found that there were two Yap clan associations in Penang which later merged together to form the Lum Yeong Tong Yap Kongsi. The ten thousands plus square feet of land on which Yap Kongsi was built was donated by a local tycoon named Yeap Chor Ee, who was also a member of the Yap clan.
