
Penang Perspective: A Coastal Drive










Known locally as Penang’s “sakura”, these cherry blossoms are Tecoma trees that produce flowers in white and pink colors. The flowers usually bloom during the dry season of the year, such as during February-April or in June-July period. These trees can be found at the Bayan Baru area in Bayan Lepas on the island side and Jalan Raja Uda area on the mainland side.


Arulmigu Sri Mahamariamman Temple is one of the oldest Hindu temples in George Town and is located in Penang’s Little India along Queen Street. The historical temple was built in 1833 and is also known as Sri Mahamariamman Temple.
On a side note, Thaipusam festival was also held on 8 January this year in Penang.

Lion dance performance during the Chinese New Year celebration at George Town. Lion dance in Penang was found to have started during the 1930s, whereby it was a tradition brought over by immigrants from southern China back then. Hence, the common lion dance here is the southern lion dance style. Usually performed during Chinese New Year or any major Chinese event, the lion dance is believed to bring luck and fortune.

One of the two oldest markets in George Town, Campbell Street Market was built in the early 1900s, and it featured unique colonial architecture design.
