George Town Street View: Burmah Road

Burmah Road

Burmah Road (or Jalan Burma) is a long stretch of road that starts from Penang Road in George Town connecting all the way to Gottlieb Road, beyond the outer reach of the town. The road was named so due to a large number of Burmese who used to live in the vicinity of Pulau Tikus area where this road passed through.

It was also known locally in Hokkien as Chia Jui Lor or loosely translated as “Water Carting Road”, a reference for the past old days when water was being carted along this road back before the water pipeline system existed.

It was found that the first Park(ing) Day was created in San Francisco back in 2005, as a mean to create civic awareness on urban amenities.

Fish Lane

Fish Lane (or Lorong Ikan) is a small street in George Town that got its name due to the locals who were hanging salted fish to dry outside on the street back in the old days. The reasons being the area was close to a nearby marketplace and not many could afford a refrigerator at that time. There is also a wall art sculpture depicting the origin of the area.
