Penang State Automotive Gallery

Opened in February 2026, the Penang State Automotive Gallery at 57 Macalister Road, George Town is a new museum dedicated to Penang’s fascinating transport heritage.

Its collection traces how people travelled around the island through the decades, with exhibits ranging from handcarts, bicycles and trishaws to horse-drawn carriages, motorcycles, vintage cars and an official vehicle once used by the Governor of Penang. Historical photographs provide further glimpses into early transportation, while two former Penang Hill funicular train carriages displayed outside are among the gallery’s most distinctive attractions. Housed in a purpose-built, climate-controlled gallery incorporating green and upcycled design elements, it makes an interesting stop for families, history buffs and motoring enthusiasts alike.

The Automotive Gallery is currently open from 9am to 5pm daily, except Fridays and public holidays, at the Penang State Museum complex on Macalister Road. It is currently free admission till 16 September 2026.

Penang History Gallery

The Penang History Gallery is an immersive, interactive museum on Bishop Street in George Town that recreates life in Penang from 1786 to 1957, spanning two floors with 37 distinct historical themes covering the colonial era, World War II, Japanese occupation, and independence. Housed in a beautifully restored colonial-era Anglo-Malay townhouse, the gallery features meticulously recreated scenes like old alleys, traditional grocery stores, a classic barber shop, and a vintage kopitiam, complete with costumed mannequins, period props, photographs, and AI-enhanced exhibits that bring the past to life.

Visitors can try on traditional Nyonya attire, ride a retro tram, enjoy nostalgic coffee, and join guided tours, making it Malaysia’s first interactive history museum where fun meets learning. In summary, the Penang History Gallery offers a unique, hands-on journey through Penang’s rich multicultural heritage in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage zone. The gallery is located at Bishop Street and opens daily from 10am to 8pm.

Greenhall: History Museum of Penang

History Museum of Penang (or Pinaon Time Tunnel) is a small museum recently established along Greenhall Street in George Town. Within the museum, there is a ‘time tunnel’ which basically showcases the timeline of Penang through various exhibits and sculptures. It was said that Penang island was once referred to as “Pulau Pinaon” (which sounded similarly to “Pulau Pinang” in Malay) by the British back during the time before the island was occupied and developed.

Penang Isle: Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Centre

The Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Centre is located at Macalister Road, George Town and is housed within the Penang Philomatic Union building (also the building’s former name). It was said that the Penang Philomatic Union was founded by a political party supporting Dr Sun Yat-sen (the founder of Republic of China) in 1908, and had provided some of the staunchest supporters of his cause for a Free World. Dr Sun Yat-sen also reportedly conducted his first speech in Penang at this building.

Penang Isle: Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is a historical and cultural rich building located along Leith Street in George Town, Penang. A winner of multiple historical and heritage awards including the ‘Most Excellent project’ Award at the UNESCO Heritage Awards 2000, the blue mansion is one of the most visited and a definite tourist destination in Penang. The mansion is said to be one of the two of its kind outside China which also features architecture design of both Chinese and Western influences. The mansion was built by a famous Chinese merchant in 1880s named Cheong Fatt Tze and it has 38 rooms, 5 granite-paved courtyards, 7 staircases with 220 vernacular timber louvre windows.

The mansion now serves as both a museum (with guided group tours) and a boutique hotel at the heart of Penang’s heritage zone.
