Penang Street Food: Maggi Goreng with Sunny Side Egg

A popular local mamak place, Ali Mamak Stall serves one of the nicest Maggi Goreng found in Penang.

The Maggi Goreng is a street food style consists of fried instant noodles (usually the Maggi noodles) which is common in Malaysia. It is commonly served at Indian Muslim food stalls or usually called ‘mamak stalls’ locally. The noodles are fried and often served with eggs and fried chicken. Maggi Goreng is a Malay phrase which can be translated as “Fried Maggi”.

Penang Street Food: Tandoori Chicken and Naan Set

A typical set of Tandoori Chicken and Naan bread usually found in the many ‘mamak’ coffeeshops across Malaysia, including Penang too. The Naan bread can be eaten on its own but it is usually served together with the tender Tandoori Chicken, dhal, mint sauce and onions.

Penang Food: Maggi Goreng

Maggi Goreng (or translated as “fried Maggi noodles”) is a common style of cooking instant noodles of the Maggi product brand which is common in Malaysia. This dish can be generally found at Maalay or Indian Muslim (or Mamak) food stalls in Malaysia. Maggi Goreng is prepared by stir-frying the noodles with vegetables and eggs.

Penang Food: The Mamak Breakfast

A very common breakfast meal ordered by the locals here at Mamak stalls is the ‘Roti Canai’. Roti Canai is a type of Indian-influenced flatbread found and is said to be originated in Malaysia. The word Roti means bread and Roti Canai is usually prepared by twirling the dough to be a very thin sheet and then folding it into a circular shape which is then grilled with oil. Often accompanied with curry gravy, this is still a cheaper and yet satisfying breakfast option for most people here.
