Stewart Lane: The Alley Cafe


Tucked along the small alley of Stewart Lane beside the famous Kuan Yin Temple in George Town, The Alley cafe is a rather hidden cafe that is popular locally with its churros and cronuts. The cafe itself is actually housed in a former Chinese paraphernalia shophouse called Kedai Gaharu Keat Seang.

Joss Sticks Stall

A photo of an old roadside stall selling joss sticks and other traditional Chinese prayer materials. Joss sticks are a type of incense typically used for prayers in a Chinese temple. This stall is just one of the several lining up along the Stewart Lane side of the old Kuan Yin Temple.

Seven Terraces is a row of heritage townhouses along Stewart Lane which are converted into a boutique hotel. Penang Street Art (A Game of Sparrows)

Art Mahjong

A steel rod sculpture depicting the favorite pastime of most older generation of the local Chinese communities here in Penang – the game of Mahjong. Mahjong literally means sparrow in Chinese, and is usually played with four persons. Legend has it that it was Confucious who invented the game, though this was pretty much debatable. A set of 144 Mah Jong tiles consists of 36 tiles in the Bamboo suit, 36 in the Circle suit, 36 in the Character suit, 16 Wind tiles, 12 Dragon tiles and 8 bonus tiles (4 Flowers and 4 Seasons). The objective of the game is to collect sets of tiles according to the number and type shown on the face of each tile. This sculpture can be found towards the end of Stewart Lane, behind the Goddess of Mercy temple.

This large vivid mural is the second painting by an artist named Julia Volchkova. The mural, which depicts an old man rowing a boat, can be found on the side wall of a house along Klang Street (Lebuh Klang). The large mural is hard to miss if one drives or walks along Stewart Lane.

Stewart Lane: Coffee Atelier – Cafe 55

Cafe 55

Cafe 55 is located at the corner pre-war shophouse of Stewart Lane and Chulia Lane. As with most of such cafes in George Town, the cafe serves both food (such as spaghetti and all day breakfast) as well as various drinks, especially coffee. The cafe is notably known for its 3D latte art.
