The Hungry Ghost Festival
The 8.3 meters tall effigy of the King of Hades (or Tai Su Yeah) where devotees offered prayers to, during the 7th lunar month of the Chinese calendar in conjunction with The Hungry Ghost month.
This giant effigy was placed under a shelter beside a temple at Market Street of Bukit Mertajam old town, for 15 days until the annual Bukit Mertajam Phor Thor (Hungry Ghost Festival) celebration. The effigy will then be moved out to the street and burned on the festival day.
According to the Taoist belief, when the gates of hell open in the 7th lunar month, spirits would be freed to the living world while being watched by Tai Su Yeah. The Hungry Ghost Festival this year started from August 14 until September 12.
Love Lane: Chinese Guild of Carpenters
Serving as both the guildhouse for Chinese carpenters and the temple of the ‘North Duke’, this building was found to be built in the year 1865 and is located along Love Lane, George Town. The Guild of Carpenters was founded back then by the local Chinese Cantonese craftsmen who also worshipped ‘Lo Pan’ (or literally ‘North Duke’), the patron saint of the Cantonese tradesmen.

An old church established in the year 1854 by the British at the Balik Pulau town area, the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus serves as the communal place for the local Catholic community to this day.
Penang Isle: The Golden Pagoda
The Golden Pagoda is a four storeys bell tower built at the compound of the Dhammikarama Burmese Temple. Completed in 2011, this additional building was built in the Burmese architecture style. Within the four floors of the bell tower, one may find exhibition of various Buddhist sculptures, murals and artifacts. The Golden Pagoda is open to the public with free entrance. There is also a donation box inside the building should one wishes to do so.

Penang is also home to a few famous Thai Buddhist temples in the country such as this golden Siamese structure, which is part of the Wat Chayamangkalaram temple (Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram).
